Today I had a call booked with a potential client. This client is a highly successful man who’s written a book with Brian Tracy. He’s beyond wealthy and has many connections.
Imagine my excitement! I’ve been writing professionally for 3 years. It’s time for it to start paying off, and it has! But just barely. Now I’m thinking this could be the start of something new.
He offers me work. At less than Fiverr Pro prices. And on spec (though he doesn’t use that phrase). If you don’t know what that means, it’s work you write in the “hopes” that you’ll get hired. Not a bad proposition when you’re going for a gig that’ll pay you industry wages, which for a copywriter are highly reflective of the value we bring to every industry.
But for a job that pays LESS than Fiverr Pro wages??? Are you kidding me?
The worst part? I started to accept the job because I thought this was an opportunity that I couldn’t miss. Plus, the work sounded really exciting. Plus I’m getting ready to go on a trip and I wanted the extra money.
So all you rich 1%-ers that sit around paying people SCRAPS, that officially sucks! (I’m just beginning to taste that sweet flavor of success, and I’ve been paying higher than industry wages when I hire people since I was a poor, single mom with hardly anything.)
Guess what? Next, I had a call booked with a woman who has a struggling business. She didn’t balk at my wages. She didn’t try to get a discount. She hired me on the spot and I can’t wait to help her double her numbers over the next few weeks!!
If she can pay full wages, if I can pay full wages, then it stands to reason that the bigger businesses and the 1% can pay full wages.
And if you find yourself tempted to take lower wages than you’re worth, STOP. Ask yourself how you’ll feel if you do. If it’s cheap, low value and used, skip it.
You will find those who appreciate your value enough to happily pay for it!
